Don’t Worry About NameDrop

I’ve seen some seemingly alarming news lately claiming that Apple’s new NameDrop feature, which allows you to quickly share contact information, is unsafe. Some local law enforcement agencies and others are posting on Facebook and other social media that this feature could send all your contact information to others without your knowledge.

While it certainly makes for good headlines and stories, this concern is greatly exaggerated, if not downright false.

Read on to learn why NameDrop is safe and secure.

Fill It Up: AutoFill

We use the internet to buy so many things: books, clothes, electronics, and even groceries and airplane tickets. Though some companies keep our information on file so that we don’t have to enter it for each purchase, many times we end up having to type our address or credit card number. Rather than typing these out each time, there’s an easier way. And, in Apple’s latest updates, it’s gotten even better.

AirDrop: Apples to Apples

We use our iPhones and iPads to take photos, write documents, take notes, and much more. Often we’re with other people while we’re creating things, whether it’s taking photos during a trip, planning a vacation together, or working on a presentation. I’ve written in the past (here) about how important strong, unique passwords are to staying safe and secure online. It’s difficult to keep track of which companies have had issues and if we have accounts there. Luckily, there is an easy way to know if our accounts are at risk and to make changes to improve our security.

Apple recently announced new devices and released updates to their various operating systems: iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. These system updates are not the major system updates we usually get near the end of the year, but a smaller collection of features and tweaks. As with every release, there are also a set of bug fixes and security and privacy updates. Here’s a quick overview of the updates.

Taking Notes

When I was in school I carried several notebooks with me. I kept track of everything in them: class notes, assignments, project research, bits of random information, and even doodles. In our digital world, keeping track of information is much easier than the old days, with the added benefit of being able to easily find and share things as well as having access on all our devices. In this post I cover more ways to keep records and store information.
