Many of you probably use your iPhone to keep track of shopping lists. It makes it easy to jot things down that you want to remember to buy, and you always have your phone with you. Wouldn’t it be nice if several people could add items to the same list so you know that you’re getting everything needed at the store? Luckily, that’s pretty easy to do with the iPhone.
The Reminders app that comes with your iPhone and iPad (and the Mac, too!) is a great way to keep track of tasks and to-do’s, but it’s also useful as a shared shopping list.
To start, create a new shopping list called “Grocery.” To do that, start Reminders and tap + at the top right of the screen. If you don’t see the + but instead see a single list, tap on the list’s title to show all your lists, and then tap + at the top right:
You will be asked if you’d like to create a new Reminder or List. Choose List:
If you’re using an iPad, tap Add List at the bottom left.
Type Grocery for the new list name, tap a different color if you’d like, and then tap Done:
Once you have a new list set up you’ll need to share it. To do so, tap Edit in the upper right, tap Sharing, then tap Add person…:
Start to type the name you’d like to add and choose from the list, or tap + and choose from your contact list. To add more people, tap the + button for each new person. Once you’ve added everyone, tap Add in the upper right:
You will see the names you’ve added. If they are correct, tap Done:
Joining the List
Once you’ve added someone to your list, they will receive a notification on their device. They just tap the notification, which will take them to the Reminders app, or, if they miss the notification, they can start the Reminders app themselves. Once in Reminders, they tap the new list:
To join the new list, they tap Accept:
Now your shopping list is shared with the people you added, and when someone adds something to the list, everyone will see it. Also, when someone checks off an item, it will disappear from everyone’s list.
This works great for a grocery list since you never know who might notice that you’re out of milk or who might be stopping at the store. You all have the same list!
You can create as many shared reminder lists as you’d like. My wife and I also have shared lists for Target and Home Depot so that if either of us has something we need from one of the those stores, we can easily add it and we’ll both see it.
Tip: Use Siri
You can use Siri to add items to any list you’ve created. For example, just tell Siri:
- “Hey Siri, add eggs to my grocery list.”
- Or, “Hey Siri, add furnace filters to my Home Depot list.”
Always Have The Complete List!
Using shared lists in Reminders has made it so much simpler to make sure my wife and I both have the right list. No more texting each other while we’re in the store to see what the other might need. I hope this article helps you always have the complete list while you’re at the store.
